I have been diagnosed with AVN recently and am petrified because my physician has mentioned possible surgery (total hip replacement). The MRI results show 80% bad in both hips., however my right hip is the worst according to my pain. I am a 47 year old male and have not had surgery since I was 4 years old.

Since the diagnosis, I have been prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs (celebrex & vioxx), vioxx which I am taking currently, which seems to help, but by the night time my hip is hurting again. I am now also taking an alternative medicine called glucosamine liquid, 1 tablespoon a day. I just started this yesterday and I hope that this will do some good. I heard remarkable stories about this and was assured that this will help. I was taking glucosamine w/condroitin tablets, but the lady at the health food store told me that the liquid works faster. If you have any information or comments on this, or know anything else for me to try, please let me know. I am desperate to avoid surgery. I currently walk with a cane at work and use a walker at the house. There are times that I can walk without the cane after I am walking for a while. My physician told me that exercise is helpful, such as bike riding. Please let me know your comments.

Thanks,

Donald (Ponchatoula, La.)
