I'm seven weeks post-op from bilateral hip replacement. I turned 30 on March 23 (30th birthday in a rehab hospital was such fun ;-). I'm still using a walker. Most of this is due to nerve damage caused from stretching my legs for the hips to be placed in their proper place and to make up for a 1-inch deficit on the left side. I would greatly encourage you to consider doing your hips one at a time. It seems that everything as far as recovery is doubled with a double hip replacement (at least in my case). I would also encourage you to go to a rehab hospital for a couple weeks to readjust to your new hips and the precautions. I went to an excellent hospital in Indianapolis (Rehab Hospital of Indianapolis). I don't know what I would have done with out that rehab and therapy time. As for when too much pain is too much, that's for you to decide. Not your doctor, friends, or family. You know when you're ready. I had hoped to wait a couple more years, but I saw my activity level decline drastically the last few months. What every you decide, I wish you all the luck in the world.
