Rich, The surgery itself is painless. It's when you wake up it hurts :). The morphine isn't so bad. They tried an epidural on me the second time around and it only numbed the unoperated on leg. The first few days are difficcult. I owe everything to my lovely wife for seeing me through. Although I'm having some difficulty after 5 months I still am glad I went through with it. At 36 you should gain more mobility than you ever dreamed. My hip joints were locked up and binding bone on bone. The books refered to on the home page of this site will help prepare you and your living conditions for thr. I was scared too but I truly believe this was the right thing to do. Best of luck, Mike
