Dave I am 37 and had THR on Dec 8, 2000. It was the best thing I have done for myself for many years. I feel fantastic. I have no pain and more mobility than I have in 15 years. I plan to start hitting golf balls again in march getting ready to play. But I would recomend you WAIT just a little while longer. Do some research on the new hips that are available and the ones that will be available soon (m/m). Be vaery careful with the pain drugs they can cause a worse problem long term than the hip. My choice got easy for me. I could not even swing a golf club without pain. I couldn't walk over 100 yards and had almost no range of motion. The pain was so bad that when I rolled over at night it would wake me up. The final blow came when my right knee (Left THR) started giving me problems and the doctor agreed to go ahead and fix my hip. There will be a time when the joy of life is not worth the pain and discomfort and that is when it is time to do it. GOOD LUCK Tony PS: With a bad hip I could drive a golf ball 300 yards. I can't wait.
