Hi Marty - I'm 42 (female and in relatively good shape) and also injured my hip in a car accident - when I was 17! (Dislocated in a head-on collision in a VW Beetle.) The last 2 years I got progressively worse, and my doctor said it was time to think about "setting a date.'' I had the surgery (THR on left side) - metal on metal - last week (1/11). I'm already on a cane, have been out for short trips and all in all it's gone a lot better than I would've thought. Here's my take on when to do it: because it's inevitable, why go thru all the pain for another 6 months or year? It's too soon for me to tell how this will all shake out, but right now, I'm pretty amazed at how I'm doing. GOOD LUCK!
