Hi Heidi, I had both my hips replaced, one in May 1997 and one in October 1998. When you leave the hospital you will be using crutches, however, it is quite easy to go up stairs using crutches. They will show you how to do that before you go home. However, being on your own will present other challenges, Such as putting your socks on. As long as you have to rely on two crutches to get around it would be better if you had some help. After my last operation I could get around with one crutch after about 10 days if I had to. Hope this helps, and good luck.
