I was in the exact same position last summer. I am 49 years old and arthritis in both hips, but the left one was really shot. I had been having discomfort for nearly six years with it, and real pain for about a year. It had gotten to the point by June of last year that when I moved my feet in bed, it woke me up. And then I was too uncomfortable to go back to sleep. I had the surgery on the left hip on 7/26/99 and have not regretted it for a moment. I wish I had done it months earlier! The change in the quality of my life is phenomenal. My co-workers have commented on how much my appearance has improved (I was frowning a lot I guess). And I sleep, sit, stand, walk pain free. The doctor said the old hip, when he got to it, was like a mortar and pestle instead of a ball and socket.
I know it is a tough decision to make, and no one can make it for you. But there are a lot of us out here that will tell you that it is life-changing in a very positive way!
