Hi Tim,
So terribly sorry to hear about your wife's (what is her name?) THR experience. Surgery is traumatic enough, and one should not have the additional stress of incompetent nursing care.
I had my surgery at the Jewish General Hospital in Montreal and the care of staff ran the gamut from angelic to brutal. As I have many friends and relatives in the States (I am originally from NY), I know this happens not only in Canadian hospitals - it usually depends on the ward you are on and its staff.
I also suggest you make a formal complaint to the hospital with copies to the Ontario Minister of Health and any other person in the Ontario and Canadian government who should be made aware of your wife's intolerable experience.
